The Glacier Club at Tamarron

Durango, Colorado

Client: Tamarron Development Corporation

The Glacier Club is located at the heart of the new resort community north of Durango, Colorado. Positioned atop a large ridge in a wooded setting, it overlooks the practice area, the 1st golf hole, and down valley views toward Durango. The Club Cottages, Showndown, and other residential areas will be connected by a trail system that leads to the Clubhouse. The Glacier Club amenities will include outdoor terraces for dining and special functions, a free-form swimming pool, casual and formal dining areas, as well as golf operations, a 5,000 square-foot practice green, and pro-shop. Design Workshop located the site for the Glacier Club and worked with the operator to program the circulation and function of the golf operations. The Glacier Club Clubhouse opened in the summer of 2003, and golf course play began in 2004.

Design Workshop was retained by private clients to serve as the golf course architects, landscape architects and land planners for the remodel of the former Sheraton, Tamarron resort. The property consists of 426-acres of pristine natural forest with stunning views of the surrounding San Juan mountain range. Design Workshop’s role was to develop a championship golf course as an amenity within an overall master development plan that includes 300 residential units. The site’s severe topography and space limitations posed interesting design challenges. Design Workshop’s comprehensive services provided the means to address all golf and planning issues holistically, in an efficient manner that reduced the overall budget, while creating a first class golf course and residential community. The creative use of landform vegetation and views will result in a memorable experience for all visitors.
