Design Workshop Asheville Discusses Steep Slope Development Trends and Concerns
20 May 2008

Asheville, NC- As Asheville well knows, one subject that stimulates controversy and lively discussions in mountain cities is development along their slopes. The cost for a beautiful view can be a staggering one both economically as well as environmentally. Current national and regional trends in zoning and other ordinances seek to protect ridge tops and steep slopes from the adverse affects of poorly planned development. This month Design Workshop will join the Asheville Chapter of the American Institute of Architects to examine regulations in our area, and present best development practices that address these issues. Design Workshop, recently named the American Society of Landscape Architecture 2008 Firm of the Year, is an international firm practicing landscape architecture, land planning, urban design, golf course architecture and strategic economic services. The firm brings nearly forty years of experience working in the well-regulated and challenging natural environments of the Intermountain West and has assisted local agencies establish regulations for steep slope development. “Too often, regulatory language makes challenging situations even more intimidating. Our intent is to share our experience, speak plainly about the issues, illustrating the discussion with easy-to-understand graphics”, says Glenn Stach, an Associate in Design Workshop’s Asheville office.
On May 28th at Trinity Episcopal Church, Glenn Stach and Walt Cole will present the pressures and realities of increased development in the mountains, public safety issues and offer best practices for use by developers, property owners, and design professionals engaged in the sensitive development of challenging hillside environments.
Design Workshop has centered its practice around mountain landscapes and cities. Headquartered in Denver, Colorado, Design Workshop is a 200-member firm with seven offices across the United States including Asheville. By merging artistic vision, environmental sensitivity, community values and sound economics, Design Workshop creates unique and dramatic places that stand the test of time and leave a legacy for future generations.
