The American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) has selected Design Workshop to receive the 2008 ASLA Landscape Architecture Firm Award, the highest award the Society presents each year. Founded in 1969, Design Workshop is an international landscape architecture, land planning, urban design and strategic services firm with seven offices in the U.S. and work spanning the globe. The firm has been recognized through the years with over 145 prestigious awards for their work in new communities, urban centers, resorts, public parks, golf courses and residences. Fittingly, at the same award ceremony, one of Design Workshop’s founders, Joseph A. Porter will receive the ASLA Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon a landscape architect for his lifetime achievements and contributions to the profession, the welfare of the public, and the environment.
The firm’s philosophy challenges staff and their clients to equally merge artistic vision, environmental sensitivity, community values and sound economics to create unique places that stand the test of time. They refer to their approach as DW Legacy Design®, and examples of legacy projects are Riverfront Park, Denver, Colorado; Kananaskis Village, Alberta, Canada; Clark County Wetlands Park, Clark County, Nevada; Inn on Biltmore Estate, Asheville, North Carolina; Pittsburgh World War II Memorial, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Kierland Commons, Scottsdale, Arizona; Glacier Club Golf Course, Durango, Colorado; Union Park, Las Vegas, Nevada; and Aguas Claras, Belo Horizonte, Brazil.
Design Workshop president, Becky Zimmermann states, “We are so pleased to have our innovative work and our approach to design validated by ASLA with this great honor. What is really gratifying about this award is that it recognizes not a single project or event, but an entire body of work. It celebrates the consistent implementation of high quality, meaningful work and acknowledges the firm’s influence on the direction of the profession of landscape architecture.”
The awards will be presented by the Board of Trustees of the American Society of Landscape Architects during their annual meeting in Philadelphia from October 3-7. ASLA is the national professional association for landscape architects, representing more than 18,200 members. Its mission is to lead, to educate, and to participate in the careful stewardship, wise planning, and artful design of our cultural and natural environments.
