Aspen Office

Aspen, Colorado, is the original location of Design Workshop. For over 45 years, we have developed renowned expertise in resort, residential and community design and planning projects unique to the mountain landscape.

Our ability to design for sensitive environments is based on our extensive history of work throughout the American West. We intimately understand design and planning begins with a deep awareness of the complex issues presented by the surroundings. Our experience and approach applies beyond the alpine environment to our projects at national and global locations. As evidence of our success, we receive frequent recognition and awards from esteemed professional organizations including the American Society of Landscape Architects, American Planning Association and Urban Land Institute.

While the Aspen office strives to create outstanding projects, our staff also prides itself on taking advantage of the unparalleled recreational and cultural opportunities Aspen and the surrounding areas have to offer. The Aspen Idea of “a healthy body, mind and spirit” is taken to heart and the multitude of experiences we have in this small town with big ideas informs and enriches the projects we have the pleasure to work on every day.

The Aspen office is led by Shareholders Kurt Culbertson and Richard Shaw, and Principal Mike Albert. Please contact them for business development inquiries.

Area Overview

The Roaring Fork Valley is an internationally renowned winter and summer resort area, located high in the Rocky Mountains. Aspen and Snowmass Village offer the best of downhill and cross-country skiing in the winter, while in the summer, they host cycling, mountain biking and hiking enthusiasts as well as art and music patrons. The Roaring Fork, Frying Pan and Crystal Rivers are a fly fisherman's dream and boast some of Colorado's best trout fishing while the Colorado River creates excitement for the white water rafting types. Although tourism is the No. 1 industry, Aspen is a thriving community where 6,307 year-round residents take great pride in maintaining its charming Victorian past. First silver, then coal and later near-perfect snow conditions and incredible scenery, enticed more recent settlers to the Roaring Fork Valley.
