Legacy DesignSM is one of the defining characteristics of Design Workshop. It is a commitment to more than land planning and landscape architecture in the traditional sense. It suggests a level of inquiry that is elevated and a design envelope that tackles bigger issues than the project and its mapped boundaries. Legacy DesignSM insists that that work reflect the critical issues facing the planning and landscape architecture professions and society.

To practice critically and to deliver design excellence, we must set the course of projects and evaluate our performance according to Legacy DesignSM principles, which include: a comprehensive project approach that embodies consideration of environment, art, community and economics; inclusiveness of a broad range of team member experience; transparent decision-making that includes all team members focused on the comprehensive challenge of the work; and quadruple bottom line accounting that requires design inquiry, strategizing and scoring each of the four categories—environment, art, community and economics—throughout the design process to measure success in project work and the level of engagement in Legacy DesignSM behavior.

Legacy Forum Leaders will work together under the direction and leadership of Design Workshop’s Chief Design Officer to develop design methods and process models in their areas that can be applied consistently to projects to achieve Legacy Design outcomes.
