Aaron Nelson
Landscape Architect, Salt Lake City
2006 Salt Lake City Summer Internship

What was your favorite memory of your Summer Internship experience?
I liked the downtown walks, riding the train to work, hiking the foothills to catch a view; all activities that helped us understand the urban design dilemma.

What did you learn during your Summer Internship experience that you did not know before coming to DW?
16 heads are better than 1, and 32 hands are better than 2. With a talented team like ours, it's amazing what can be produced in just 10 days.

Why did you choose to come work for Design Workshop, after your Summer Internship?
It's the best gig in town. Working for a firm like Design Workshop is what I dreamt about in class.

Landscape Architect, Salt Lake City
2006 Summer Internship in Salt Lake City

What was your favorite memory of your Summer Internship experience?
The drive from Salt Lake City to the Tahoe Basin was remarkable. The desolate salt flats, the seemingly endless range and basin landscape, and the setting sun over Lake Tahoe displayed the living canvas in which Design Workshop grounds its vision. The eight lonesome hours reflecting on the immense value of the charrette, and anticipating the next eight weeks discovering Tahoe, was a moment in time that influenced my career path and changed my perspective of Landscape Architecture.

What did you learn during your Summer Internship experience that you did not know before coming to DW?
No matter how diligent and well managed a team is, all-nighters are inevitable. It has nothing to do with college shenanigans.

Salt Lake City is not the center of the universe, but pretty close.

Design Workshop is really about sneaking in powder days… and the only time anyone will admit it, is on the slopes.

Your precious, perfect, outstanding idea can only be improved by others. Listen.

Why did you choose to come work for Design Workshop, after your Summer Internship?
What!? Your telling me this was voluntary?!  All jest aside, I’m excited to continue growing in chorus with the amazing people in the firm.  Design Workshop provides the environment I need to thrive professionally and personally.  It’s a community where contributing my values and ideas is expected and appreciated.
