Dubai is one of seven Emirates in the UAE, located where the Rub Al-Khali Desert, otherwise known as the Empty Quarter, meets the Persian Gulf. The alluring Emirates attract international work force and tourism populations, fueling entrepreneurial investment in the area. Rapid economic growth in the UAE has grown increasingly from non-oil trade sectors. Culminating this ascendance, Dubai will host the World Expo 2020, the premier global public exhibition, grandly conceived and constructed to showcase international innovations aimed at creating a better life for society.
The recently established Dubai office reflects the remarkable growth in the region, applying Design Workshop's wide-ranging expertise with desert communities and urban environments.
The firm’s Middle East presence builds upon regional work completed by the firm and Principal leadership in Jordan, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and India. Office capabilities are focused on community planning, mixed-use urban design and public realm landscape architecture.
Design Workshop’s emergence in the region coincides with a shift toward more sustainable development patterns and practices, whereby compact, mixed-use, community-oriented development patterns seek to address national challenges.
The Design Workshop office is located in the Dubai Marina, the quintessential mixed-use urban environment in Dubai, organized around an engaging waterfront public realm, active streets and community uses. Known as the largest man-made marina in the word, Dubai Marina was built as a canal city along a several kilometer long stretch of the Persian Gulf. Expected to accommodate approximately 120,000 residents, some of the world's tallest residential towers define the marina skyline.
The office is located within a few minutes' walk from the Dubai Marina metro Red Line station, connecting the office with downtown, Dubai Airport and other key destinations. A tram is also under construction in the Dubai Marina area. The 14.5 kilometer tram will establish an internal circulation network within Dubai Marina but will also connect with external destinations such as the Burj al Arab hotel, Mall of the Emirates and a monorail at the Palm Jumeirah.
