Design Workshop’s Todd Johnson
is named a Fellow in the American Society of Landscape Architects
SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH — Design Workshop’s
chief design officer, Todd Johnson, celebrated a lifetime of
personal and professional accomplishment Saturday evening when
he was inducted into the Council of Fellows of the American
Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) at a formal banquet at
the ASLA’s annual meeting, which was held this past weekend
in Salt Lake City. Johnson was one of only 32 landscape architects
nationwide who received the honor, which recognizes him for
his extraordinary achievements throughout three decades of practice.
“I am grateful for the recognition,”
says Johnson. “Landscape and urban design provide a window
into how the world operates. I consider it an honor and a privilege
to assist in the development of communities and the design of
spaces that are actively used by people. A combination of great
clients and dedicated public officials has allowed me to realize
these dreams.”
The designation of an ASLA Fellow recognizes
accomplishments in works of landscape architecture, administrative
work, knowledge and service to the profession over a sustained
period of time. Individuals considered for this distinction
must be members of ASLA and in good standing for at least 10
years and must be recommended to the Council of Fellows by the
executive committees of their local chapters.
Johnson’s career highlights include several
Colorado projects, including redevelopment of Larimer Square,
urban design of Riverfront/Commons and landscape design for
the Jefferson County Government Center and Great West Life corporate
headquarters. He is currently at work on the redevelopment plans
for the former Gates Rubber Factory, the former Lowry Air Base
and the former Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in Denver, and
a large-scale rail-yard conversion in Las Vegas. Johnson has
been honored with awards and recognition from the ASLA since
1975 and has been published in Urban Land, Landscape Architecture
and Progressive Architecture magazines.
Johnson joined Design Workshop in 1996 as a principal
and partner. He earned his master’s degree in landscape
architecture from the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University,
where he was awarded the prestigious Jerusalem Fellowship. He
has worked for Sasaki Associates and Landplan of Calgary and
was a founding partner of Civitas. He has been an adjunct or
visiting professor at both the University of Colorado at Denver,
the University of Texas at Austin and Arizona State University.
Other involvement by Design Workshop partners
at the ASLA meeting included chairing of the CEO Roundtable
by Greg Ochis and a presentation on the implementation of sustainability
by Kennecott Land on a former mining site at the Daybreak community
in Utah by Terrall Budge and Joe Porter.
