Symposium: Park Planning When Everything Is a Priority

Aug 22, 2017

Description

Parks are increasingly being recognized not just as a place for recreation, but also for the role they play with economic development, social equity, health and wellness, crime, transportation, and environmental issues. While this presents an incredible opportunity for planners, landscape architects, and park professionals to shape a community, it also results in increased competing public interests and new complexity in park master planning and design. Through speakers and case studies, this session will introduce different frameworks focused on the four factors that affect park use that can be used individually or in tandem to both justify and prioritize recommendations for park improvements and additions. Additionally, new technology will be shared that is helping create smarter parks, including data beneficial for park planning. Bobbi Nance, President of Recreation Results, will deliver a keynote address framing the discussion with insights from her career, which includes 15 years working in the field of parks and recreation. This talk will be followed by presentations and critiques of three current Design Workshop projects focused on parks and park systems.
