High Terrace Garden
Aspen, Colorado
Inspired by the rustic French style of the residence's architecture, Design Workshop developed the 12-acrelandscape of the residence using a series of terrace levels to create formal outdoor rooms. The entry courtyard contains a rich carpet of stone and plant materials that create an inviting arrival as one approaches the residence.
Garden and outdoor comfort is expressed through the development of intimate and formal social gardens, open-air spaces that are transformed into furnished outdoor rooms. The notion of landscape is explored as an extension of indoor space, allowing for the easy transition between dining, entertainment and outdoor living.
Retaining walls enclose the space and step back in elevation to allow light and air to penetrate to the hardscape. The east terrace, designed for formal entertaining and dining, frames dramatic views of the Roaring Fork Valley. It is designed with a water feature that serves as a focal point for the garden. Flanked by formal plantings, an outdoor fireplace and garden pergola, the central grass area is designed to house a tent for large gatherings. In contrast to the east terrace, the west terrace is an intimate space outside the study room of the house.
