A slice of modernism in a rustic environment, Snake River Residence challenges the notions of contemporary design in a rugged landscape. Respect for the existing natural systems is evident in the use of native materials and restorative techniques. Trees, shrubs and perennials are placed in grid patterns, formalizing the organization of these natural systems in a thoughtful and unique manner.
Design Workshop was given the challenge of developing a landscape design that integrates two large residences into their natural surroundings on a 35-acre site in the Snake River Valley. The resulting design makes a bold statement in keeping with the contemporary architectural forms, while subtly interweaving layers of openness and enclosure, movement and stillness, grand gestures and exquisite details. Extensive site and programmatic analysis fueled the design process, resulting in a powerful yet subtle framework for experience the land. The design successfully connects the residences to the mountain, forest, plain and river landscapes that characterize Jackson Hole.
