West End Contemporary

Aspen, Colorado

Merit Award in Residential Design - ASLA Colorado Chapter

This residence, located at the west end of Aspen, is a truly unique synthesis of architecture and landscape architecture. Situated amongst 80-foot high mature spruce trees with direct panoramic views over Hallam Lake, this historic house was rebuilt with an exceptional attention to detail to produce a modern, minimalist interior. The facade was fully restored to its original state. The same remarkable attention to detail utilized in the interior was brought into the landscape. Strong axial lines were used in conjunction with a softer planting palette to produce a landscape that was both functional and aesthetically stunning within its environment.

Technologically innovative details were incorporated into aspects of this project without conflicting with the mass of delicate tree root systems. Other elements included a steel frame pavilion with movable fabric walls and a cantilevered observation deck and an interior courtyard garden.
