Design Workshop Wins Three Texas ASLA Awards

5 April 2010

Austin, Texas – Design Workshop, an international landscape architecture, planning and strategic services firm, was awarded three ASLA Awards and received the Stewardship Designation at the ASLA Texas Chapter Annual Conference earlier this month in San Antonio.

Each year the Texas chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) recognizes outstanding examples of recent work and publicizes their contribution to the quality of life for the citizens of Texas.

This year, Design Workshop won the Award of Excellence for both its Lewisville Old Town Plaza project and its design and planning-focused practice book “Toward Legacy,” securing two of the four total Awards of Excellence given at the 2010 conference. Design Workshop also won the Merit Award and was given Stewardship Designation for its university and industry collaborative known as Design Week.

“This is a proud moment for our outstanding team at Design Workshop. With every project strive to raise the bar for what is possible in planning and landscape architecture,” said Steven Spears, RLA and Principal at Design Workshop in Austin. “Each of the prestigious recognitions demonstrates the innovative thinking and collaboration at Design Workshop and we are grateful for continued support from ASLA.”

An Award of Excellence winner in the “Design: Unrealized Projects” category, Design Workshop worked closely with the City of Lewisville to create an iconic public space, driven by human comfort and programming, that will become a destination for both locals and visitors.

The firm also won an Award of Excellence in the “Communication” category for its comprehensive practice book, “Toward Legacy.” The award-winning book walks readers through the firm's design philosophy and methodology known as DW Legacy Design® by profiling how this concept has been integrated into actual projects.

ASLA Texas recognized Design Workshop with the Merit Award and Stewardship Designation for Design Week, the firm's innovative pro bono effort aimed at creating a link between education and practice. Since its launch in 2004 at Louisiana State University, Design Week is now a national program that joins landscape architecture students with students from other disciplines, faculty and a real client in a collaborative learning environment to pursue a real project.
