Residential Gardens

West End Garden

Aspen, Colorado

A synthesis of historic preservation, modern architecture and landscape stewardship

The design for this 1.2-acre urban garden pays homage to its cultural history and serene natural setting, while skillfully layering a new vision. Driven by a commitment to preserve and sustain the long-term vitality of the forested glade, the landscape architecture successfully respects and prioritizes the health and importance of the existing mature tree canopy, while sensitively revitalizing the property through the implementation of a contemporary site plan and modern materials.

The design – a quiet composition of restrained geometries, enduring materials, and native flora – is achieved through a highly complex, technical system of sub-surface structural infrastructure. Through an aggressive application of pre-construction management practices, successional planting strategies, maintenance techniques and continued monitoring, the design process exemplifies the value of arboricultural practices in the evolution of a tightly constrained, urban residential landscape. The result successfully prioritizes sensitive natural community benefits, natural systems and infuses opportunities for outdoor pleasure, renewing the property’s legacy and significance.
